Decks

Utah has a specific residential-code deck exemption. Height alone is not enough: guardrail requirements, required exits and other work matter too.

A preliminary guide, not official approval. The department makes the final determination. Sources reviewed November 6, 2026.

Where is the property?

A mailing city or ZIP code alone does not establish the building authority. Choose County only for an unincorporated property under its authority.

Your answers stay in this page session. They are not saved or sent to McCann Contracting. Opening an official link leaves this guide.

What matters for this project.

Utah Code 15A-3-202(5)(b) sets conditions for a residential-code deck exemption: a maximum height of 30 inches anywhere above grade, no required guardrails and no service to a required exit door.

Confirm residential-code applicability and the complete project with the local department. A roofed porch, patio cover or enclosed space needs a separate scope review. Ask about surface maintenance or any part of the work you are unsure of.
